Most totes are open at the top, which is fine until it rains or the bag tips over in the back seat. This one zips shut. The front pocket zips too, so keys, a phone, and a pen stay where you put them instead of sinking to the bottom under a Bible and a hoodie.

The canvas

100% cotton, heavy weight, 12 oz. That is a step up from the 9.4 oz canvas on our other totes, and you can feel the difference in the hand. The natural body panel is undyed, so the small flecks in it are cotton seeds and natural fibers rather than flaws. It starts out stiff, softens where it gets handled, and keeps its structure everywhere else.

Zippers, straps and construction

The main compartment closes with a full width zipper across the top. The front pocket is 9.5 inches wide by 9 inches tall with an 8.5 inch zipper, sized for a phone, a wallet, and a pen or two. The handles are 24.5 inch self-fabric straps in the contrast color with an 8.5 inch drop, long enough to go over a shoulder and short enough that the bag rides at the hip.

Capacity

18 inches wide by 14 inches tall with a 4.5 inch gusset across the base. The gusset is what lets the bag stand upright and square off when you set it down, where a flat tote just flops over. A study Bible, a notebook, a water bottle, and a sweatshirt fit with room to spare, and a 13 or 15 inch laptop slides in flat against the back.
